I tried my best sounds good, but it can be the most comfortable way to stay the same. We dig into a simple idea from Tim Grover, the trainer known for working with Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant: There’s a real difference between trying your best and doing your best, and that difference shows up in your results.

We talk through how this mindset plays out in powerlifting and strength training, especially when the weight gets heavy and your brain starts negotiating. You’ll hear a deadlift story that nails the point, one attempt filled with hesitation, turned into a clean pull the moment you commit. We also get practical about what doing your best actually looks like, from taking warm-ups seriously to showing up fueled, focused, and ready to execute.

Then we zoom out to the bigger picture: doing your best is a daily standard, not just for in the gym. If you’re not practicing discipline and follow-through at work, at home, and in your relationships, it’s tough to magically lock in”under the bar. And on the hard days when life is lifing, we come back to a rule that keeps you consistent: you don’t need 100% to show up, but you do need to give 100% of what you have.

If you want more strength, better fitness results, and fewer excuses that haunt you after a miss, hit play.

Welcome And New Camera Angle

SPEAKER_00

What's going on, you guys? Welcome to another episode of the Fortis After Hour Podcast. I'm your host, Nate, joined by my wife Liz. Hey. And we have another awesome episode planned for you guys today. And you may notice we have a new angle. After I don't know, a lot of years, I decided it might be cool so you guys can actually like see our faces instead of just like the side profile. Um, so we're gonna see how this works. It's a little bit different because like I still want to talk to Liz because that's who I'm talking to, but at the same time, I can kind of talk to you guys as well. Um, if you're not watching this on YouTube, you should. Um and then you get the full experience. Uh, if you are on YouTube, welcome. Um, but yeah, we have a pretty awesome episode planned for you guys today. Uh, I'm pretty excited about it. It's actually inspired by a I guess video. I was gonna say quote, but it's kind of like a video that I saw earlier this week.

SPEAKER_01

Like an interview video.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Like not just like some random post of a video or something.

SPEAKER_00

Um, but the the person that was being interviewed is his name is Tim Grover. Um, I don't know if you've ever heard of him before. I'm gonna guess no. Um, but he is a pretty prolific personal trainer, actually. Um, he trained Michael Jordan, uh Kobe Bryant, and just some other more high-profile athletes, so to speak. It's pretty good. Yep, pretty good, pretty good. Um, and now has kind of like transitioned over. Um, I I don't know, he might still train people, but he does a lot of stuff like he wrote a book, um, things like this. I actually read, listened to, um, one of his books that was fantastic. And I think that's when I started following him. But, anyways, we're gonna talk about a quote from a video that he made, um, and just kind of how it can apply to your own life um as either a power lifter or as a person chasing down their own fitness goals, whether you're trying to get stronger or run faster, whatever

Tim Grover And The Big Idea

SPEAKER_00

it is. Um, I think this is really good information for people.

SPEAKER_01

Um you were very excited about this video when you started.

SPEAKER_00

I was very excited. And I'll give you guys a little bit of background. So uh when I was growing up, like my parents always encouraged me to uh, you know, do my best or try my best. And I just kind of like, you know, sometimes like when you're young, you're like, uh, like I think I try. I don't know. Like, you know what I mean? Like you you don't have like a good gauge on what actually trying your best is versus doing your best. Uh, because there is a difference, and that was kind of what this guy was suggesting, and I absolutely love this quote. Um, so yeah, so basically, um I tried to find the actual quote so I could read it, but it did not exist.

SPEAKER_01

Well, it's like a whole video is the problem. Like it's not just like one line out of the video, it was like the whole feel that he was going off. You know what?

SPEAKER_00

We will go ahead and link that uh in the comments for or in the uh description for YouTube and uh I think I can do that on Instagram. Um, but I'll definitely do it on YouTube. You can do that in the description so you guys can check it out. Um, but basically it's a short couple

Trying Versus Doing Your Best

SPEAKER_00

minute clip, and he discusses the concept of doing your best versus trying to do your best or just trying your best. Um and like the difference between the two words. And I just absolutely love the comparison because you know, when you're trying your best, you know, okay, like I'm trying, there's like a little something left, you know. It's like, oh yeah, I tried. It's like okay, like, you know, like you you may leave a little something on the table, so to speak, right? Like you're trying and you're you're trying. And it's not to say you're not trying hard, or maybe like you are actually, you know, trying the best you can. Um, but it was an interesting like concept. The way that he put it, it's just like, you know, when you're trying, you're not like all in, you're not fully committed as someone that's doing their best. I am doing my best. And you know, the difference being when you do your best, um, you know, there's number one, like a level of commitment where you are like, I'm gonna go out there and do my absolute best to squat this weight, to deadlift whatever. Um, and in doing so, when you come across failure, because you will, I mean, that's just life. Like, you try enough things, you're gonna fail. Um, you know, when that happens, of course there's like a little bit of defeat, but like it's not like I don't know, it doesn't sit with you as long in my brain.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, you like did everything you could.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, basically. Because I mean, if you do everything you could and you just fall fall short, you don't get the result. I mean, it is what it is.

SPEAKER_01

Um, you just have to keep going. I think like definitely this quote or video, I think resonated a little bit more with you than it did with me. And it took me a little longer, I think, to process like what the difference was. Yeah. So like for you, you like got it right away, which is fine. But for me, I'm like you like said it and I like kind of had to like think about it. And I was like, well, kind of isn't it the same? Like, so if you're thinking that, you're not alone. Yeah, um, but it definitely took me a little bit to be like, well, but like trying your best, like you're kind of gonna do your best if you try your best. But then, so I tried to kind of like I tried. Um, I was thinking, like reflecting, trying to, I guess, understand it a little bit more and like how I interpreted it, just because like obviously everyone's gonna interpret things a little bit differently, just from life things, basically. Um, and I would say like the thing that I like thought the most, or like kind of one of my first thoughts once I like actually thought about it, was like if you're trying, there's gonna be just a lot more excuses as you go. Or like excuses are gonna be like okay. Like, oh I tried, but da-da-da-da-da. Like I tried, but I was tired, or I tried, but the music wasn't right, or I tried, but I just wasn't feeling it today. Um and then, but if you do your best, like yeah, I did this today. I failed, but I did it. So like there's not really like, or I didn't, I guess technically, I I did, but I just failed it. Um, so I guess that was kind of what I ended up kind of like processing through that was like if you're trying, there's always going to be some excuse along the way. If you do your best, you might not always do it. Like it might not be like the outcome that you want, but you're still doing it and like giving it your all versus like just trying.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and I think I think that like what you're saying is absolutely correct because I feel like you know, when you're trying, you almost if you try your best, it's like, okay, like you tried, but it's like, did you actually do your best? Like, I feel like doing your best is the full, like full throttle version of like trying your best. Because like I feel like if you try, you're leaving a little bit of something on the table. And that's I think the words that he uses like you're leaving a little something on the table versus when you do your best, like you are committed, you're committing to whatever the task is or the lift or whatever, and all those things, like you're saying, the excuses kind of just go away. Yeah, and I also feel like when you do your best, there is no guilt when you fail. You know what I mean? Like there's no and therefore filled with excuses, like versus when you try, you might have like a little you might be like, Oh, there well, there was this, this, this, this. But it's like, okay, did you actually like try?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. I mean, I know there's a lot of times, like even in training or lifting or whatever, like if you ask me this all the time or tell me this all the time, like if I want to like do another weight, like a heavier weight or something. And I was like, Well, I I kind of want to try it. And you're like, Are you gonna try it or are you gonna do it? Like, which is funny because that does kind of like apply to this, and then I'm like, Oh, well, I'm gonna do it. And then, like, I don't know, it just I guess I mean you ask me that all the time. It's like a mindset thing. Like, are you gonna try to do it? Are you like actually gonna commit and like do it? And then I mean, I guess if you fail, you fail. But like if you're committing to doing it, like I don't know, you've asked me that like forever.

SPEAKER_00

That's always been I asked all of my yeah clients that because because it is a it is a mindset thing, and that's I guess I mean that might be part of why this like hit me like so like clearly. I'm like, oh my gosh, because like that's like what I talk about, because it's just a different thing, you know. If I'm like, yeah, I'm gonna try it again. Like, I I do not like that. Like if you fail, and then it's like I'm gonna give it, I'm gonna give it another shot. It's like, what? Like you just failed this. Like, you're either going to go do it, and then look again, if you do fail, like Liz is saying, okay, like and it just wasn't there that day. But like, especially in that situation, like when you have people that maybe like they fail the lift and then they're like, I'm gonna might try it again, or maybe I'll give it another shot. It's like, what? Like, yo, you just failed. Like, you need to be like locked in. Like, I am going to go do this, or like,

A Deadlift Miss Turns Into A Win

SPEAKER_00

I'm not.

SPEAKER_01

Like, one of the things the last time when I failed the deadlift and you like didn't want me to take it again, but you asked me like what I was gonna do differently, and my answer, my answer was just, well, I'm gonna get it. Yeah, I failed the deadlift, and then it was like the last heavy deadlift of prep or something, and you just kind of asked me, like, what are you gonna do differently?

SPEAKER_00

Well, because you had said this is actually that's a perfect illustration of exactly this concept because, like, so Liz had kind of been struggling with her deadlifts, and then she did like the the week before she failed one or something, and then we're gonna try and I changed my belt and it was not something I've done. And I'm just like, and like she had a couple misses, a couple, like just kind of not bad sessions, but not great, right? Like, just kind of not great, yeah, not great. They were not great, and you know, so she went up and everything was looking good, but she goes and she misses this top again, which I knew, like I knew she was strong enough. It was just a matter of like really positioning. I think you're finding out the colour. Well, that one, yeah, how good.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, yeah, that's that's a thing, but also like I think like because like I still remember like watching it back like after the fact, like it moved.

SPEAKER_00

Like, I probably could have actually gotten it the first time that I did it, but for whatever reason, my brain said, No, we're not doing this for and that was that was the thing, is because I I knew as a coach, I'm like, she cannot fail again. So, like that's why I asked her. I was like, What are you because like she's like, I'm just gonna try it again. I'm like, what? Like, I was like, Were we not trying on that one? And then it's like she literally like looked at me dead in the eyes, just like I'm gonna get it. I was like, okay. I was like, all right, that's what I because like that's a kind of that's a great. Yeah, it's a great illustration. And then she ripped it like easily, right? Like, could have doubled it. And that is the that is exactly like like in real life, what I'm talking about. Like the difference between just like your mindset and like how powerful your mind is, you guys. And like that's something that just people just don't understand. Powerlifting is like such a like more mental game than people realize. Lifting weights, trying to get jacked, trying to get shredded, trying to uh just lose weight, trying to gain weight, if you've you know struggle with that, it's so much up here, so little in here in the gym. I mean, it's yes, like you do need to do that. You have to do the work, of course, you gotta do the work. But like, if you want to actually achieve some like tangible results, like some real results, it's gonna take time. And if you like aren't actually like locked in mentally ready, actually doing your best every single day, doing your best, like it's not, I mean, you're not gonna have fun, you're not gonna keep doing it. So you have to like give it

Make Doing Your Best Practical

SPEAKER_00

your all, do your best, empty the tank on every session and then every lift. I think that's another thing that I wanted to talk about today was like, you know, like there's this concept that's such a like kind of what we talked about was kind of a vague concept, right? Like it's like do your best. It's like, okay, like on what? Like my squats, my accessories, my everything. Everything. Exactly, y'all. Like everything. And breaking it down makes it way less overwhelming. Like, if you're listening to this and you're like, okay, like I gotta just start doing my best. Like, when do I start? It's like, okay, like that's good. Like, if you're like, okay, like I'll motivated, that's cool. But like how you start would be maybe next time in the gym, or maybe before the next time in the gym. Hey, am I drinking my water? Am I fueling my body? Um, and am I ready to roll? And then just check things off as you go. Like, okay, I got my warm-up. I am doing my warmup. I'm not just like, uh, you know, and that's something I struggle with. Like, if I actually do my best on my warm-up, my top end lifts look way better.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. And I think, like, obviously, like we're applying this to a gym andor powerlifting and things like that. But I also think that there's a very real aspect of like just doing this in your entire life, like in every aspect of your life. So when you're saying, like, oh, where do I start? What do I do? How do I do my best? Like, basically, whatever it is that you're doing, do it the best that you can do. Like, give your all to what you're doing. Yeah. Like, I've obviously that's going to look different in different

Let The Standard Carry Into Life

SPEAKER_01

situations and different scenarios, but like when you're at work, like do your job. Like, I mean, that's kind of very basic, but like do what you need to do for your job. Like, I'm not saying you have to go like crazy above and beyond your job, but be good at what you're doing. Like, have pride in what you're doing with your family, like whatever it is that you're whatever role you play in your family, like do the best, like be the best that you can be for your family, like in that moment in time. So, like, whatever the moment of time that you're in, whatever role you're playing at that time, whether you're at work, at the gym, with your family, with a significant other, with your friends, like be that very best that you can be, like in that moment. And like the more that you do that, like throughout your whole life, yeah, the it's just gonna become like second nature to be the best and do your best at like any given moment. So, like in the gym, like if you always are gonna do your best at work with your family, at home, with your friends, whatever, it's just going to become second nature to do your best in the gym, too. You're going to come up with less excuses in the gym if you don't make excuses throughout like the rest of your life either. Like 100%. Just like let it carry over to like all of your life.

SPEAKER_00

Well, it bleeds into everything else. And I think that that is like a really good point, is that like, you know, it's not just in the gym, and it makes it a lot easier to do stuff in the gym or vice versa if you're doing it elsewhere. You know, if you're yeah, if you're slacking off, like being lazy, not doing your job, not doing your job well, not doing your job to the best of your abilities, then you come to the gym, you're like, I'm gonna lock in. No, you're not. Like, literally, you're not like you because you don't know what locking in is. You don't know what doing your best is because you've never done it. So, like, you need to start practicing doing your best outside of the gym, uh, you know, for your family, for your friends, at your work, um, and doing your best.

SPEAKER_01

And also for yourself, like with whatever outside, even outside of your own. For yourself.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, for yourself and excluding others. That's exactly what I was gonna say is that doing your best has nothing to do with anyone else around you. And I think that's a big thing, is like people get like so like, well, you know, take the job thing. Well, I'm at my job and like, I mean, Liz is clocking out early. It's like, okay, great. Like, that's what she's doing. Like, I'm gonna do what's, you know, I'm gonna work till the time, or I'm gonna clean up or stay after and do whatever it takes. Like, I still remember when you were a teacher, um, and I just didn't understand the amount of I just don't think I understood the amount of work that you needed to do to do a good job at your job. And she'd be like, I'm taking this home. I'm like, what are you doing? I'm like, we don't like you don't need to be doing this. Then the more I, you know, I was with you, I was like, oh, like this is she's actually doing the minimum to be great at her job. Now that's different than the minimum to do your job. Yeah. And I think that that's maybe the what I'm trying to talk about. Is like, you know, if you are actually doing your best, it might look like next to other people that you're excelling, but you're just doing your best. Yeah. Like your actual best.

SPEAKER_01

Try to excel at things. But also there might be some things that you're just kind of average at. And like that's also okay too.

SPEAKER_00

Like you don't have to be great at everything. Yeah, and I mean great at everything.

SPEAKER_01

Is that even I would even say like with powerlifting, like some people are just genetically going to be better or just their life is just going to make them better at powerlifting. So, like, even if two people are both genuinely doing their best, one person might just be doing better than the other. Yes. But that doesn't necessarily like that doesn't knock what the one person is doing because maybe just genetically, they're just not as strong. And like it's going to take them longer or it's going to take more effort, like in other areas or something to, you know, make the progress that they are wanting to make. And that's just kind of life sometimes too. So, like I, you know, obviously, if you do your best and like you excel at something, that's awesome. But also, sometimes you might do your best and you might just be kind of average at it, which also isn't necessarily a bad thing because it's still the mindset of doing the best that you can do. Because also, if you aren't doing the best that you can do, then you're not even gonna be average.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, this is facts. Like, I'm just saying, like and like you're saying, I just like want to reiterate if you're if you're not practicing this outside of the gym, like the gym is only a small part of your time in the day, realistically. Even if you train for like three hours or you like Fortis, you hang out for four hours, five hours, that's still relatively small. Like, that's not a lot of time. There's 24 hours in the day, like that's a fraction of the day. And if you're just counting on just that to like, you know, I'm gonna, you know, this is me doing my best. It's like, eh, it's just not gonna, it's not gonna hit as hard as someone that's actually next to you doing their best in all aspects of life. Now, like Liz said, that doesn't mean doing your best doesn't mean like you're absolutely super successful in every single thing that you do. That's not at all what that means. Um, but what it does mean is that you are emptying the tank on each task throughout the day. You are fully committing to each task throughout the day. I'm going to hit this water goal. I'm going to meet with my friend at two o'clock because I said two o'clock. You know what I mean? Like things like this.

SPEAKER_01

And I think something like as far as like doing

Give 100% Of What You Have

SPEAKER_01

that, I I guess this is kind of related, uh, sort of. There was one time, I think it was when I was teaching still, that some, I don't know, professional development meeting or something or another. But basically the person was saying, like, you know, you want to give 100% of your effort to X, Y, or Z, which is kind of what we're talking about. But like some days you don't have 100% to give. Maybe you only have 70% to give to whatever, for whatever reason life happens. Yes. But of that 70%, you need to give 100% of the 70%. Great. I love that. That's great. And so that that's just something that's always kind of stuck with me. Cause no, like, you might not be at your full capacity to do whatever the task is for whatever reason for that given moment, day, whatever. Yeah, no, no. Life happens, things happen, you're tired, you're sick, you're stressed, you're whatever. Life is lifing. So, like, you might not always have a hundred percent, but like you have 70%, you have 50%, you have 30%, but you're giving 100% of what you have in that moment for that day.

SPEAKER_00

And that right there is the difference between trying your best and doing your best. Because you could just be showing up and I'm trying my best, I'm trying to make it through. I got, all right, like that's cool. And then someone next to you, like, I think people forget this. Like, other people have stuff going on in their life too. Everyone does. We do, our clients do. You know, everyone has stuff going on in their life. And, you know, I truly believe, like, it's just all very like similar. And I don't mean that to like demean certain things. Certain things are like, you know, serious emergencies, certain things are not. I'm not saying that that's exactly the same. But what I am saying is there are times in life when like, you know, each person goes through like some sort of an emergency, or each person goes through this. And I just I do believe like over over time, I mean, it kind of is just it is life. You know what I mean? We're in life. Like now, you know, again, like I I get there's outliers, certain people may have it like much more like difficult or whatever than other people, and certain people might have better situations than other people, but but also you don't really know because you could look at someone and be like, wow, their life sucks.

SPEAKER_01

And they could think that their life is awesome.

SPEAKER_00

They're like, I'm having a great time, or vice versa.

SPEAKER_01

You look at someone and be like, wow, they live a cushy life, but like you don't actually know what their life is like.

SPEAKER_00

So and that's why, like I said, when I look at someone like and talk with someone, I just I just assume that everyone is like like going through life. Like, and it's not like necessarily super bad or super good all the time. I think that that's something everybody can agree on, but you just are going through life, and therefore, on the days like Liz said, when you are at 20% power, that's fine, but you're using the full 20%. Um, you know, there's because you still can do a lot more than you think at like 20%. And I think that's a lot, that's another thing. It's like, oh, well, I'm tired today. It's like, cool, man. Like, I was tired last week, or I'm tired today also. Like, that's it happens. It happens, but you have two options. Are you gonna try your best or are you gonna do your best for the day? You know, like are you going to give it your absolute all, commit to the process of whatever you're doing, or are you just gonna phone

Why Results Follow Commitment

SPEAKER_00

it in and oh yeah, well, I made it to the gym. It's like, all right. And you know, I think the the biggest thing you guys too is like, you know, as you're maybe listening to this and thinking about it, like your results will uh your results are going to match what you end up doing. Um so like if you are someone that is coming in and doing your best, absolute best, every single day, your results will match that. Um they're going to show that. If you are someone that comes in and you you try and like you're here.

SPEAKER_01

And look, like you can still get results, but just trying.

SPEAKER_00

You can still get results. And sometimes, like, I I get it, but like if you just like are doing that, and then you're again if you're comparing, because I just think a lot of people do that in the fitness space, like they're comparing themselves. It's like it's kind of incomparable because one person is doing their best every single day. Um, you know, whether it's 10, 20, 100 power, they're giving it their all. And that will uh give you different results, like, period, than someone that is trying, you know, I'm here.

SPEAKER_01

And like that's that's and for some people that's all that they can do. And maybe some periods of life, that's all that you can do. Like, I, you know, obviously life just happens, but you know, you you never technically know, and like you might go through phases, and like also like if you are a person who is just kind of like trying their best right now and you're listening, you're like, yeah, like that's probably more what I do. Yeah, like you're not gonna be able to go from that to like 100% doing your best like overnight. Like it's going to actually take effort, it's going to take some like mental, some mind work, some like working through that to like make that shift from trying your best to doing your best. And like that's okay. Like if you're not like 100% perfect every day right now, but you're like, hey, like, you know, maybe you're working to get to that in the gym and or in the rest of your life, whatever areas you want to start with, like it might take a little bit of time, but also like that's okay. Like you're trying to make a change in like your mindset and what you're doing and how you act and your behaviors, and like that just takes time for anyone to make a change, no matter what kind of change you're making.

SPEAKER_00

So absolutely. Yeah, and I think uh, you know, lastly, you guys, like I think another thing that I like about this quote and this concept from Tim Grover is that anyone can do their best. Okay, it might look different, like Liz saying, like you might be at a stage where you're just trying to like get to the gym, you're just trying to, you know, I mean, like you're you're some people that might be doing their best. Exactly. And that's what I was gonna say is that showing it up at the gym might be doing your best. Exactly. That is doing your best, and that's what I was gonna say. It's like, you know, like that everyone has the option to do their best. You'll notice not once that I talk about a certain weight, a certain goal, a certain name, like it's because it doesn't matter. It is you versus you, quite literally. And it's like, are we going to actually give it my all today and commit to doing my best? Or am I not? Because everyone can do that. You have that choice every single day, no matter how like whatever, how tired, whatever you're going through, sick, whatever. Like, you have that choice, and I think that you would be a little bit surprised at what you can accomplish if you start doing your best. So I agree.

Anyone Can Choose Their Best

SPEAKER_00

I think that's pretty much it for the day. I was stoked about this episode, to be honest.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, um, very excited about this video.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I was pretty excited. Um, hopefully, you guys found that helpful and useful. And like I said, the quote came from Tim Grover. Check out his stuff. He's got a lot of books. Um, and if you're into listening to books, they're good. I already listened to it. If you like reading, Liz doesn't read those kind of books. But I don't know. If she did, uh, you can check it out on the Kindle, I'm sure, as well. Um, but yeah, check out Tim Grover. He's got a lot of good, good content, and I really, really, really like this quote. And hopefully you guys found this episode to be a little bit helpful. Um, if you have any questions or you're like, you know, okay, like how can I tell if I'm doing my best? Things like that, uh, feel free to message us. We're usually pretty active on Instagram.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah, because we have a meet.

If you just want to follow us on the one that you prefer, that's also cool. Uh, because I don't blame you. I myself am an Instagram person. I'm not going on TikTok to consume content, but we will be posting on TikTok. Um, and we'll see you there or YouTube or Instagram.
